Home LIFE HELPS Time Management

Time Management God's Way

turning the clock back

Need more time? Check out these free tips.

Many students want more time because their lives are so rushed with:-

  • assignments
  • exams
  • personal time, cleaning one's teeth etc, etc

student in rushMore time is desired, but God gives exactly the same amount of time to all people each week.  It does not matter if you are a national leader or just a student, in each week you have 168 hours, no more and no less.  The real challenge is to use the time that God gives more productively - time management.

Tip1   Don't be lazy, WORK

A few students are just plain lazy.  "Oh, can’t I wash these plates tomorrow; I’ve decided to go out; my favorite TV show is about to start.  I need to go to a party."

God has created man to work, that’s how life is.  The Bible strongly condemns laziness.

... "Whoever does not work should not eat." 2 Thessalonians 3:10

Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper and be satisfied. Proverbs 13:4

Tip 2   Proper REST

work smarter, not longerMan has been created to work during the day and to sleep at night.  In addition, man also needs other periods of rest.  It’s easily possible to work too much and many students, especially research students, lower their productivity through overwork. What is the secret to achieving one’s best?  Is it possible to work smarter, not longer?

Why are there 7 days in a week?

There have been a few times in history where people have tried to increase the working week, to increase productivity.  For example, France tried a 10 day week at the time of the revolution, but the 7 day week was reinstated when results showed all was not well.  pilot errorSimilarly, during world war 2, England was seriously short of fighter pilots for the Battle of Britain.  The pilot's seven day cycle of work and rest was increased to gain more flying hours; but it was quickly found that the stressed pilots made many more errors. The regular seven day cycle was quickly reinstated.

All this comes as no surprise to people who know the Bible.  In the beginning, God created everything in 6 days.  Then He rested (stopped creating) on the seventh day.  God has stamped this "work six days, rest one day" duty cycle into His creation.  In the Ten Commandments, God has commanded that we are to work for six days, then rest on the seventh day.  This law applies to all humans including employers and employees; and even to farm animals.  This day of rest is called the Sabbath in the Bible.  Christians recognize it as Sunday - The Lord's Day and they gather all over the world for the collective worship of God in local churches.

8 "Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days a week are set apart for your daily duties and regular work, 10 but the seventh day is a day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any kind of work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; then he rested on the seventh day. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy. Exodus 20:8-11

There are great blessings to be received by keeping God's Sabbath law.

  • Allows the body to catch up from the physical strain of work.
  • Allows time with family and friends.
  • Allows for mental refreshment.best output, work six days
  • Allows the body to do inner repair work, facilitating better health.
  • It results in the highest productivity.

But I want to work this Sunday!  Is there an exemption?

neglecting one's soulProbably not!  God's laws cannot be changed, but this one does have some practical exemptions.  God gave the Sabbath as a day of rest for man's benefit! But the Bible does give exemptions for genuine emergencies and safety and health issues.  Christian Pastors are also permanently exempt as they are called by God to work diligently on Sundays, bringing the Word of God to the assembled people at local churches.  But Pastors also need rest and so they have a private rest day during the week.  During this day, they stop their regular duties of caring for others and feed their own souls and rest.

Consider using Sunday as God intends

  • Stop your regular work and REST.  Use this time to feed your soul.
  • Attend a local church service, join the worship of God.
  • If you are uncomfortable with church, join a Christianity Explained course.  This will explain what Christians believe and why spiritual things are so important.
  • Do some private reading of the Bible.
  • Visit someone who is ill, lonely or aged.
  • Catch up with family and friends.
  • Walk in a park and consider the wonders of God.
  • Think about God, His Creation and where you fit in.
  • If you have a sedentary lifestyle, do a little physical exercise.

Tip 3   Do what is IMPORTANT

After getting the correct balance between work and rest, the next important thing is to plan your work.  Everything in life must be balanced.  Everyone needs to decide what is really important.  As we all have limited time, we should do the most important things and leave other things.  Then, at the end of our lives, the important things will be completed.  Which way do you want to go in life?

Consider these things:-

  • Health is important. We all need to do things to maintain our health.  Even cleaning teeth is important.
  • Sufficient sleep is important.
  • Education is important.richest tomb in cemetery
  • But is it important to be the richest corpse in the cemetery?  What about life after death?
  • Spiritual things are more important than physical things because they are eternal.  Jesus said:-

... how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process?  ...      Matthew 16:26

... seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, ... Matthew 6:33 New King James Version
